Fall Work Weekend 2008 a Success!

Greetings, all!

First, Camp has found an official recruiter--Allison Laney! Thanks to all who helped spread the word of the position. Allison is very excited about being CJL's recruiter, and would love any ideas y'all might have, or to know if anyone would be interested in volunteering to help with some small things like putting up fliers at your work, school, child's school, etc. You can reach her at allison dot laney at cjl dot org. Any and all ideas are welcome!

Fall Work Weekend was a bright success. It was a cold few mornings on the mountains, but Dot's cooking with the help of a few of our Board Members kept us all going. The three major projects that got done were: putting a new tin roof on top of the Sherwood Unit Kitchen (and raising it--so that counselors and tall campers won't whack their heads on the beams!), raising the Glen cook shed roof (also so people won't whack their heads on it), and stuffing/addressing/sealing all of the fall mailings.

The Glen cook shed had not been worked on except to be raised once since its original debut in the 80's, and was a little the worse for wear, so it just got taken down and almost completely rebuilt.

Other things accomplished during Work Weekend included putting up plastic in the dining hall windows, fixing the wiring in the staff house, putting in new toe-kicks in all the tents where needed, nailing down loose nails in the tent floors, and attempting to fix the second shower in Four Winds--the one that sprays cold water from the handle while you shower. All in all, it was a fun and productive weekend!

Remember that CJL History Tours will be put on this Saturday, October 18th, if you or anyone you know is interested! We have had a lot of visitors for the past History Tours, and it's a fun time to come learn a little more about the history of our wonderful Juliette Low.

I'm happy to announce an Alum Adopt a Counselor Program! This is an easier yet fun way to ensure that staff morale remains high at CJL this summer. Please check out the guidelines below and email Shailey Kile - skkile@charter.net - if you would like to participate!

--Alums that sign-up will be paired with a counselor for the summer

--pairings will begin with first year counselors and move up from there. If there are only enough for first year counselors then the program will stop there.

--The minimum for the summer expected from an alum is the following:
-2 letters
-1 care package including a magazine and $5 Walmart gift card (has to be Walmart as that's all there is!)

--Pairings will be assigned prior to Reunion weekend as alums that attend reunion are encouraged to make an effort to meet their counselor.

Spring Work Weekend!!

It’s TIME!!!

The CJL Spring Work Weekend is scheduled for April 18, 19, & 20.

This is our weekend to open camp in preparation for the annual Parent-Daughter Weekend, which will be two weeks later. Our main task will be to clean and prepare Camp for the big event and do lots of small repair jobs. The Parent-Daughter Weekend has proven to be extremely successful in our recruiting efforts and for spreading the good word about CJL. It is vital that we have lots of help making Camp look as good as possible. If you know friends, relatives, or other Alums that would like to join up for the fun, fellowship, and fabulous food (oh yes, and a little hard work), please invite them and include them on your registration form. We would really appreciate the extra help and would especially appreciate a commitment to work both Saturday and Sunday.

Many folks arrive on Friday night after supper (Dot’s first meal will be Saturday morning breakfast). Work begins Saturday morning right after breakfast. Remember to bring warm clothing and warm sleeping gear as it can be chilly at night on the mountain. Don’t forget your rain gear!! As always it’s helpful to bring work gloves and whatever tools you think might be handy such as rakes, shovels, clippers, hammers, etc. Especially handy are gas-powered blowers.

Please email Carolyn Wood Frost at cfrost214@bellsouth.net to make a reservation by Tuesday, April 15th. Please be specific about the number of people in your party and meals to be eaten. It is very important to give Dot an accurate meal count, as she will have to purchase all the food for our weekend. We want to have adequate food without being wasteful.

Thank you for your help and support on past work weekends and I hope to see each of you in April.
